Because of the COVID-19 pandemic many more people are now working at home. So, ergonomics in the home office is much more important than it used to be. In this article we’re going to talk about what to consider for ergonomics in the home office.
But first, what is ergonomics?
Ergonomics is the study of the work you do, where you do it and what tools you use to do it. The idea is to create a work environment that allows you to work comfortably, effectively, and productively.
What does an ergonomic home office look like?
The answer depends on what you do for work and your physical shape and size.
For example, if you spend long hours working on a computer, then it’s important that you are sitting or standing in a comfortable position with your computer at the right height. If you work while sitting down, you may need shelves or drawers that are within easy reach as well as a chair mat to slide around easily.
Ergonomics takes into consideration things like posture and muscle fatigue. And, obviously, someone tall and heavy will have different needs than someone short and slight.
Here are the main points:
Head and neck
You need to be able access whatever it is that you work with in a comfortable position for you. This comfort will stave off neck pain and headaches.
Back and hips
Make sure you are not straining to reach things or carrying heavy items that you don’t need to be carrying. This prevents lower backache and hip pain or sciatica.
The hands are very important because hands and wrists are often the source of repetitive stress injuries such as from using a keyboard.
