How to Care for Your Brand-New, Wood, Handcrafted Dining Room Table

When you buy new furniture that you love, you may be concerned about how to take care of it properly. Here are some tips for best practices when you acquire new solid wood furniture.

Woodworker’s Instructions

The first thing to be mindful of is the instructions that come with the table. If you buy something handcrafted, it’s likely that your new dining table will come with some instructions. Always read and follow those first.

Sunlight

Wood changes colour slightly with age and with exposure to ultraviolet light. Depending on what it’s finished with, the finish can also change colour slightly. For these reasons, it’s a good idea to keep your furniture out of direct sunlight, especially harsh light from, for example, a south-facing window.

If your table will be in the sunlight, then some sheer curtains will minimize any potential damage. And it would also help to turn the table at regular intervals.

Cleaning

With solid wood furniture, in general, a damp cloth should be sufficient for wiping away anything. You want to avoid using harsh chemicals and cleaning products that are not designed specifically for wood. Also, if any liquids spill, try to wipe them up as soon as possible, as wood is porous.

Wood is very easy to take of, and that’s why it has been used to make furniture for thousands of years. Wood is sturdy, timeless, and lasts a lifetime.
