What Is the Difference Between Handmade and Handcrafted Furniture?

The two terms, “Handmade” and “Handcrafted,” are often mentioned side by side and are generally quite similar in meaning. On the surface there is no difference between the two, there is no professional organization policing the specific differences between whether something labelled handmade is really handcrafted and vice versa.

In fact it is right there in the definition, handmade is defined by the Google Dictionary as being “made by hand, not by machine, and typically therefore of superior quality.” Whereas handcrafted is defined as “Made skillfully by hand.” That is the important difference as while all handcrafted furniture is handmade, not all handmade products can make the claim of having been “Made Skillfully”. It is that insistence on quality where the difference lies, it conveys professionalism and care.

What Is the Difference Between Handmade and Handcrafted Furniture?

Many products these days are machine produced, often lowering cost at the expense of quality. Handcrafted products are seen to by passionate and skilled people, put together with care and contain within them a measure of artistry. As well, every piece is in its own way unique, every piece of wood used to create every piece of furniture also being unique. Handcrafted and handmade furniture carries with it that personal stamp and has a flair to it that can’t be matched with machine assembly.
